London has long been at the top of my must-visit cities, and my summer stay finally gave me the chance to experience it first-hand. The city’s vibrant mix of history, culture, and diversity made it even more captivating than I had imagined. From its iconic landmarks to bustling markets and rich artistic heritage, every corner of London felt alive with something new to explore. The warm, sunny weather only added to the charm, making it perfect for leisurely strolls and outdoor adventures. With its efficient transport system, navigating the city’s many neighbourhoods and attractions was effortless, allowing me to fully embrace everything London had to offer. Today, I’d like to guide you on what not to miss, and how to make the most of this iconic city when you are visiting!
1. Navigating London
London’s public transport system is extensive, featuring the famous Tube, double-decker buses, cycling routes, and pedestrian-friendly streets. For newcomers, using apps like Google Maps or Citymapper is essential for navigating the city efficiently.
Most people in London use Oyster Card’s or contactless payments to pay for their commute, which allows you to travel without worrying about cash. Having lived in Dubai, where public transportation is less common, I found adjusting to London’s extensive transport system surprisingly seamless, despite the city's size. The ease of getting around made my explorations stress-free, allowing me to embrace the city fully, and explore as many places as I could.
2. Must-Visit Neighbourhoods
In the heart of London, every neighbourhood tells its own story. Whether you're exploring the lively streets of Covent Garden, the edgy vibe of Soho, or the historic grandeur of Westminster, Central London is a blend of energy and charm. Each area offers something entirely unique, making them must-visit spots for anyone eager to experience the city’s vibrant pulse and rich diversity.
For a taste of London’s cultural vibrancy, the South Bank, Shoreditch, and Camden are must-visit spots. They offer a mix of art, music, and cuisine that reflects the city’s diversity. I particularly enjoyed visiting the South Bank and Piccadilly Circus - the former for its riverside views, lively street performances, and vibrant atmosphere, and the latter for its iconic landmarks and buzzing energy. These neighbourhoods quickly became my favourites due to their unique charm, cultural richness, and inviting atmosphere.
3. Exploring London’s History and Culture
London is steeped in history, with an array of museums and galleries that are often free to enter, such as the British Museum, Tate Modern, and National Gallery. These institutions provide a wealth of knowledge and artistic inspiration.
Additionally, historical sites like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and the Houses of Parliament showcase the city’s rich past. I was particularly interested in the Tower of London, where I marvelled at the Crown Jewels and absorbed the fascinating stories of its history.
4. Food and Markets
London’s culinary scene is a delight for foodies! Local markets such as Borough Market (where you can have the TikTok viral strawberries!), Camden Market, and Spitalfields Market offer a diverse line-up of food choices. From street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, there’s something for everyone.
During my exploration, I was delighted to discover various halal food options, making it easy to enjoy the city’s diverse flavours while adhering to my dietary preferences. Each market visit was an adventure in itself, filled with delicious food discoveries and vibrant atmospheres. My friends and I decided to share and try each other's cultural dishes that I had never tried before. I got to try Indian chaat (and it’s a new favourite dish of mine), and Mexican enchiladas, and got them to try shawarma, and aubergine fettah, and it was an amazing experience for everyone!
5. Parks and Outdoor Spaces
London is home to beautiful parks and outdoor spaces that provide a green escape from urban life. Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are famous for their stunning landscapes, while lesser-known areas like Holland Park and Richmond Park offer a more tranquil environment.
I found solace in these green spaces, where I enjoyed peaceful walks, picnics, and moments of reflection after a busy day of exploration. These parks not only helped me unwind but also allowed me to appreciate the natural beauty that complements London’s urban landscape. I also cycled around parks with my friends, which was very fun!
6. Navigating on a Budget
You don't need to spend a fortune to explore London. Many attractions, including museums, galleries, and parks, are free to enter, making it easy to experience the city without spending a fortune.
For budget-friendly meals, I relied on street food, food trucks, and local markets that offered delicious options at reasonable prices. Balancing enjoyment while budgeting was achievable through planning my outings and taking advantage of free activities, allowing me to savour all that London has to offer as a student.
7. Making Friends and Building Connections
London’s diverse population and cultural richness create ample opportunities to meet people from all walks of life. The social environment at LSE Summer School, was incredibly welcoming, making it easy to forge connections.
Cafés, pubs, and parks serve as great spots for socialising, and attending cultural events can help expand your circle of friends. I was fortunate to build lasting friendships during my stay, where we engaged in activities like exploring the city, trying new foods, and immersing myself in London’s vibrant culture. One of my favourite parts of these outings was that they often started with four people, but grew to include many other by the end! It’s so easy for people to bond, and everyone is excited to make new friends, which make it such a great experience!
8. Conclusion: Making the Most of London
As I reflect on my time in London, I encourage everyone to embrace the city’s diversity and explore it with curiosity. Living in London for LSE Summer School not only enriched my time there but also provided invaluable opportunities for personal and academic growth.
To make the most of your time in London, whether as a student or traveller, stay open to new experiences, connect with others, and immerse yourself in the city's unique charm.
