Insights from an Academic Director's Scholar

I was a recipient of the Academic Director’s Scholarship in 2022, and in this blog I will share my advice for a successful scholarship application and reflect on the LSE Summer School experience.

My top tips for future applicants

Thanks to the Academic Director’s Scholarship, awarded for outstanding academic performance and exceptional promise in the field of Technology, Media and Society, I was able to attend LL204: The Foundations of AI Law and Regulation at LSE Summer School in 2022. I wanted to study this, as during my studies in Law at the University of Athens, I became increasingly aware of the opportunities and challenges that legal scholars and practitioners face in the digital era. Joining the LSE Summer School and delving into LL204: The Foundations of AI Law and Regulation was naturally an enticing prospect to explore these further.

As I reflect on the impact of my LSE Summer School experience, I feel grateful for the Academic Director’s Scholarship, which made this opportunity attainable. I hope that the following remarks will help others who are considering applying for the scholarship and shine a light on the application process.

Your application as a whole is expected to reflect your motivation and commitment to one of the following areas: Sustainability and Development, Responsible Leadership, and Technology, Media and Society. Given that the Academic Director’s Scholarship scheme supports the LSE 2030 Vision, it is my advice that you acquaint yourself with it and demonstrate how your candidacy falls in line with its guiding principles.

Illustrating the competitive edge of your application in only a few paragraphs can be a challenging task. Students applying for the scholarship are expected to focus on two main pillars: past accomplishments and future aspirations.

It is essential to display a robust background of academic as well as community-oriented excellence. A successful application will meaningfully convey the value of your prior experiences and highlight the impact of your achievements, rather than merely describing them.

Your vision for the future is another key factor in the consideration of your application, so make sure to describe your plans, goals, and aspirations. How will the LSE Summer School experience and, in particular, your chosen course, contribute towards their fulfilment?

My time as a Scholar at LSE Summer School

My time at LSE Summer School was eye opening. Once I made the journey to London, I was met with a truly empowering learning experience. The LL204: The Foundations of AI Law and Regulation curriculum encompassed a wide array of topics, including artificial intelligence, privacy and data protection, digital assets, copyright, and digital rights management.

The intricate legal and regulatory questions were approached with academic rigour and contemporary relevance by the professors, who offered unique insight into their respective areas of expertise. Moreover, the high level of student engagement and the diversity of perspectives among our international cohort made class discussions particularly intriguing.

Of course, the LSE Summer School experience extended beyond the classroom. The intensive academic curriculum was complemented by professional and personal development events, as well as networking opportunities.

Upon successfully completing my course, with help from the Academic Director’s Scholarship, I have been able to apply what I learnt back in Greece and to embark on some new, exciting journeys – now better placed to deliver a meaningful benefit to my academic and professional community.
