Research Assistant

Dr Polly Withers (LSE Middle East Centre) is seeking a part-time, Jordan-based Research Assistant to collect data as part of the project Neoliberal Visions, which builds on an earlier project and explores gendered advertisements and neoliberal media in Palestine and Jordan. The project is funded by the Leverhulme Trust and led by Dr Polly Withers.

The role will primarily involve conducting (in Arabic), transcribing (in Arabic), and translating (into English) interviews with advert-producers and advert-audiences in and around Amman. Some visual data collection will also be required (mainly photographing advertising campaigns in the city, and identifying relevant advertisements online, i.e. on YouTube).

The role is a fixed-term, maternity cover post for two days per week for up to 20 weeks. Hours are flexible.

Hours: approx. 14 hours/week
Pay: £21.80 per hour

Person Specification:

Essential

  • Fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken)
  • Experience in qualitative data collection methods (interviewing)
  • Experience of data administration and generation (ability to identify and communicate with key organisations and actors for interview)
  • Responsible, reliable, and able to work independently
  • Excellent timekeeping / ability to work to deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills
  • Master’s degree (or near completion) in a relevant discipline (e.g. gender studies, media and communications, Middle East studies/politics, anthropology etc.) or equivalent work experience

 Desirable

  • Interest in and knowledge of gender and sexuality in the Arab world
  • Interest in and knowledge of visual media and cultural politics in the Arab world
  • Knowledge of urban life, cultural politics, and advertising media (real estate, telecommunications, banking etc.) in Amman and/or Jordan
  • Experience of transcribing and translating
