Conference structure
Around 60 European Young Researcher (under 36 years of age) are invited to attend and present their research work. Forty-five Young Researcher will be 100% funded to attend the Conference (including travel, accommodation in London and registration fees). Details are reported below in the call for papers.
In addition, around 40 academics working in the field of new media and society are invited to participate.
We anticipate that between fifty papers will be presented at the Conference, which will be organised around keynote addresses, plenary sessions and parallel sessions.
The Conference programme will be available by November, 15 2002 on the conference Website, and will be circulated by e-mail to all interested parties.
A few details about the Conference:
- Dates: from 12:30 on Wednesday 23 April to 12:30 Saturday 26 April 2003
- 3 Keynote speakers. These will be high level experts and / or policy makers in the field.
- Plenary sessions, each covering one of the 7 conference themes.
- Parallel sessions, each featuring research papers on the 7 different aspects of the Information Society.
- Research Workshops on the morning of Saturday, 26th to review the themes of the Conference.
- Carefully planned social events, to allow researcher to initiate contacts for future co-operative research.
Young researchers - funding available
The EC High-Level Conferences Programme provides 100% financial support for 45 candidates to present their work at the Conference. Funding for Young Researchers covers the conference fee, travel to and from the conference venue, accommodation and subsistence in London. There are two sets of criteria for eligibility: formal and substantial.
1. Formal criteria
1. Date of birth. Young scholars must not have reached the age of 36 by the time of the event. An additional two years is allowed per child for scholars who have been responsible for the care of their children. Allowance is also made for compulsory military service (up to 18 months). Evidence of both must be provided.
2. Citizenship. Funded participants must be members of a European Union member state or states with Associate Status. A list of the states that have Associate Status is appended below. Evidence must be provided.
In most cases, a copy of a candidate's passport is sufficient to establish the above criteria. In those cases where a passport does not provide the required proof of eligibility, copies of other official documentation must be provided. This documentation must be submitted at the time of registration at the LSE on April, 23rd. If you have any questions about these aspects, please contact us in advance.

2. Substantive criteria
In order to be funded, each EC young scholar participant is expected to present a paper at the EMTEL Conference and be willing to prepare that paper for possible submission, in case publication is agreed.
Young Researchers funded by the EU have to attend the Conference over its entire length, from Wednesday 23 April 2003 (PM) to Saturday, 26 April 2003 (AM). The training component, which comprises the presentation of a paper, a possible active role in chairing panel sessions and attendance at the Saturday morning workshop are necessary condition in order to be eligible for EU funding.
