Thesis: Going beyond the mainstream? An international study on online citizen journalism

A year after graduating with a BA in Media and Cultural Studies from the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, in 2004, Dr. Ranniko earned a Master of Science with distinction in Media Research and Analysis from City University.

In her PhD research, supported by a studentship from the Economic and Social Research Council in the UK, she explored the possibilities and constraints of participatory news media online in Finland and in the USA through different types of platforms for citizen journalism.

Research interests: alternative media, journalism, social aspects of the Internet, media activism
