The EDI Working Group (EDI WG) was founded in September 2020, as the main forum responsible for monitoring, promoting, and protecting equity, diversity and inclusion in the Department of Media nad Communications, among both staff and students, and across all areas of academic life.
The EDI WG meets once per term (or more, if needed) and proactively encourages students and staff in the Department to raise issues for the agenda and provide the opportunity for them to do so confidentially or anonymously.
The EDI WG has an annual revolving chairperson, and its members represent different levels of seniority and roles in the Department and a mix of gender and ethnicity where possible.
Aims and Principles
We seek to decolonise education within the Department. We identify racial and other power hierarchies within higher educational institutions and explore their effects in our context.
- We approach problem-identification and problem-solving from an intersectional perspective.
- We adopt a collaborative approach, building intergroup connections and relationships within the university and between the university and external groups, to support our decolonising initiatives.
- We adopt an inclusive, mutually respectful approach to our work, recognising that different voices are essential to progress towards decolonisation.
- We welcome difficult conversations and recognise that being challenged is part of the process of achieving a more just and equal higher education environment, including in our Department.
