About

Sophia Anders researches the role of arts and culture for nation- and identity formation in post-Soviet countries.

Her PhD project concerns the roles that museums play for navigating complex post-Soviet legacies while engaging in ongoing identity projects, with a central focus on Georgia. Beyond this, other projects she is currently working on explore the role that cultural spaces take on for communities in Ukraine living through war.

She graduated top of her class with an MSc in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin. Prior to joining LSE, she worked as a Policy Analyst at the OECD’s Eurasia Division, focusing on economic development and resilience in Ukraine and the wieder EU Eastern Partnership region. During her studies she worked for a research institute in Ukraine and was a volunteer for the German UNESCO Commission in Georgia.
