Hello! My research investigates the diverse political economy of state-capital relations in Africa’s mining sector over the last twenty years. I am interested in documenting and understanding why states make such diverse claims on transnational capital; for example, while some states attempt to increase tax revenue, others have local ownership requirements. Interestingly, many African states are attempting to expand the purview of their local content policy. Secondly, I hope to investigate the long-term economic outcomes of these diverse claims.
I have previously studied at the University of Cape Town, Oxford and the LSE. I hope to move back to South Africa soon and work in the intersection between the African academy and African policymaking.
