Celebrating Women in Science and Technology

Hosted by Contemporary Turkish Studies and the European Institute

Online and in-person public event (Thai Theatre, New Academic Building)

This forum will present the achievements of prominent female researchers from Turkey and how they have contributed to science and technology in the UK.

Coming from different disciplinary backgrounds, such as biology, engineering, financial technology and computer science, the participants will share their experiences in building their careers. The forum will address the challenges young female academics from non-UK backgrounds face and provide life lessons for the next generation of inspiring scientists.

Participants:

Dr Melis Duyar (@drmelisduyar)is Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Surrey. Her current research interests focus on the development of novel adsorbent materials for carbon dioxide capture and catalytic materials for the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals from carbon based feedstocks.

Dr Özge Eyice (@OzgeEyice)is Senior Lecturer in Molecular Microbial Ecology at the Queen Mary University of London. Her research focuses on the diversity and function of microbial populations underlying greenhouse gas production and climate change in the environment.

Dr Zeynep Kalender Atak (@kalender_atak) is Senior Scientist in Oncology R&D at AstraZeneca. Zeynep is a computational biologist with broad experience of applying innovative bioinformatics to drug discovery. Her main research interests are computational analysis of tumour microenvironment, interactions between cancer and immune cells, and mechanisms of resistance to immunotherapy.

Dr Zeynep Okray (@z_okray) is a Postdoctoral Research Scientist, at the Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour, University of Oxford. Her main research interest lies in how the brain integrates sensory information to learn and form memories. As a researcher, Zeynep is passionate about leveraging the power of the fruit fly model (Drosophila melanogaster) to address fundamental questions exploring brain function.

Prof Pınar Özcan (@profpinar) is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Said Business School, University of Oxford, and the Director of the Oxford Future of Finance and Technology (Fintech) Initiative. Pınar specializes in strategy, entrepreneurship, and technology markets. Her current research includes AI and business models in fintech, open banking, digital disruption, and the rise of big tech platforms.

Prof Emine Yılmaz is a Professor, a Turing and an ELLIS Fellow at University College London, Department of Computer Science, where she leads the Web Intelligence Group. She is also an Amazon Scholar for Amazon, where she works with the Alexa Shopping team. Her research interests lie in the fields of information retrieval, natural language processing and machine learning.

Chair:
