This event marks the launch of the Grantham Research Institute’s (GRI) Global Trends in Climate Change Litigation 2025 Snapshot report, an annual report now in its seventh year.
This influential report presents an overview of the global field of climate litigation. The report explains developments in legal cases that seek to advance climate action, holding governments and companies to account for their failure to adequately mitigate or adapt to climate change. The report also explains how the courts are being used in the backlash against climate action from vested interests in the US and elsewhere. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement and of the delivery of judgments in three major climate change cases in the Netherlands, Pakistan and the US, all of which contributed to a “rights-turn” in climate litigation (Peel and Osofsky, 2018). This year’s report reflects on the impact that these cases have had over the past decade, considering both their influence on the development of global climate change law and their influence outside the courtroom.
