In the wake of the pandemic, governments across Europe, as well as the European Commission, have financed programs to spur economic recovery. These programs differ in ambition, as well as in the scope of policies. The event highlights key features of the French, Greek and EU programs, while also focusing on policies to reduce inequality.

Meet our speakers and chair

Luis Garicano (@lugaricano) is a Member of the European Parliament where he is Head of the Ciudadanos Delegation and Vice President and Economics Coordinator of the Renew Group. He is also Professor of Economics and Strategy on leave of absence at IE Business School.

Stefanie Stantcheva (@S_Stantcheva) is a Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Her work has centered around the long-lasting effects of tax policy – on innovation, education, and wealth.

Nikos Vettas is the General Director of the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) since 2013 and a Professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business since 2003, where he has served as the Chairman of the Economics Department and a member of the University Council.

Minouche Shafik is Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to this, she was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England. She is an alumna of LSE. Her new book, What We Owe Each Other: A New Social Contract, is out now.

The Financial Markets Group Research Centre (@FMG_LSE) was established in 1987 at the LSE. The FMG is a leading centre in Europe for policy research into financial markets. It is the focal point of the LSE's research communication with the business, policy making and international finance communities. The FMG works alongside the Department of Finance to understand problems in financial markets and in the decision-making processes of corporations, banks and regulators.
