Curriculum overview
We're ranked sixth in the world for social science and management, and the Global Master's in Management programme is founded in LSE’s tradition for academic excellence.
In Year 1, you'll follow a curriculum designed to give you foundational business expertise. Courses include managerial economics. quantitative analysis, marketing, organisational behaviour, managerial finance, financial and managerial accounting and foundations of management. You'll also have an elective (exemptions are allowed on some courses).
With this foundation, you'll develop your critical and analytical skills to deal with all types of challenges facing managers today in the complex international business environment, from people management and cross-cultural working to strategic business innovation and responsible leadership.
You'll develop a deep understanding of management theory and the understanding of what causes what and why, which is embedded into the DNA of LSE. Our teaching is grounded on rigorous research and evidence. Equally, we're strongly committed to relevance – demonstrating how you can apply theory to practice.
Your learning will look beyond management "trends" and will enable you to analyse "why things exist" and "what to do about it" rather than just "how to do it".
This programme will give you:
- skills you need to launch your career as soon as you graduate from the two-year format
- time to explore what you’re interested in
- prepare you to enter new sectors.
International options
You'll gain:
- a unique exposure to the socio-economic environment of real business throughout the programme, learning alongside a diverse cohort of classmates from around the world
- perspectives on today's international business challenges in core courses
- opportunity to consolidate your global business experience with our prestigious international options, the CEMS double degree and the MBA exchange term.
Pre-sessional activities
Kick-off the programme with pre-sessional activities ahead of your programme start – focussing on:
- team building
- kick-starting your career journey
- personal impact
- pre-requisite learning covering data analytics, maths for economics.
Course highlights
Foundations of Management (FOM)
- Foundations of Management 1
Introduces students to the big picture in management research using contemporary case studies. Look at questions such as how to design workplaces in which people are happy to turn up and collaborate. How do you best structure an organisation and how to create competitive advantage. - Foundation of Management 2
Ends the programme by examining the role of business in society. From LSE's foundation in 1895, the School's aim has been the betterment of society, and we believe that business can and should be part of that. Again, we make extensive use of case studies looking at companies like Tony's Chocolonely, Patagonia and Allbirds.
Capstone course – Management in Action (MG448A)
Capstone is a core course designed to explore management in practice. It exposes you to a wide range of business experts and thought leaders, allowing you to reflect on their own views as well as identify a range of practical strategies to increase your effectiveness as a manager.
Example speakers include senior leaders from Accenture, AstraZeneca, Bain, EY, Google, Unicef.
Business project
All students participate in a practical real life business project. Companies who have sponsored business projects in the past include Google, Bayer AG, Siemens Healthineers, Cartier, Kearney, European Space Agency, Hilti GB, Grow Movement, Richemont, Merlin Entertainments, Kellogg’s, EL Cami, Colgate-Palmolive, Kids Matter.
Dissertation
LSE pathway students complete a dissertation on a research topic of their choice in Year 2.
In Year 2 you can select from three different pathways:
- term abroad via CEMs MiM
- term abroad via MBA exchange
- remain at LSE concentrating on a specialisism.
Year 1
Introductory course
Students are required to undertake an introductory course (MG4A1) starting early September, before the beginning of the first academic term. This provides essential skills in maths for economics, quantitative analysis and writing which will be required throughout the programme.
Year 1: Foundation
This first year provides an in-depth training in the core foundations of general management, covering the same topics as a traditional MBA programme, but taking a more critical and rigorous approach to those topics. Following Year 1, the summer vacation offers time to undertake an internship (compulsory for the CEMS MiM pathway). We encourage students to undertake an internship to help apply learning and gain practical experience.
Note: You'll have the opportunity to apply for an exemption from Marketing Management and Managerial Economics. Upon demonstrating that you have the pre-requisite knowledge in these courses, you'll be free to take an elective course, subject to approval from the Course Leader.

- MBA Exchange term in a leading MBA classroom
- LSE concentration with a specialism title attached to your degree certificate.
Pathway 1: CEMS
CEMS is a global community of world-renowned business schools, Corporate and Social Partners and wide network of alumni and students from around the world. The CEMS MiM double degree allows you the opportunity to exchange at one of the CEMS partner schools and engage with CEMS curriculum, seminars and networking opportunities.
Completing the CEMS pathway will award you with a double degree – a degree from LSE and from CEMS.
You'll join the CEMS Community – a vast network of alumni with access to a range of social/corporate partners.

You can tailor the programme to your own interests and specialise your knowledge with elective courses.
Any of the elective courses listed may be taken, subject to pre-requisites and course availability, by any GMiM student. Your application will be considered on its academic merits. An offer of a place may be conditional on attending additional courses and/or passing qualifying examinations at a suitable standard, in addition to your degree. There are always many more applications than places available at LSE and possession of the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee an admission offer. We recommend that you apply as early as possible.
We welcome applications from all suitably qualified prospective students. At LSE, we want to recruit students with the best academic merit, potential and motivation, irrespective of background.
We carefully consider each application, and all the information included on your application form, such as your:
- academic achievement (including predicted and achieved grades)
- statement of academic purpose
Write a short statement about why you want to do the programme. This might cover, for example, what you'll bring to the cohort and what are your strengths. There's no fixed word limit, but we expect your statement to be between 1,000 - 1,500 words.
- two academic references
- CV
- GRE/GMAT
See further information on supporting documents.
You may need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency. See our English language requirements.
