Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPA-DSPP programme at SPP?

I graduated from Ashoka University (India) in 2024, where I majored in Economics and Finance and minored in Computer Science. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I was drawn to courses in health economics and social policy, which sparked my interest in development policy. My computer science coursework enabled me to engage in quantitative research projects in this field - an experience that I found extremely rewarding. In this line, the MPA-DSPP, a programme which is at the intersection of data science and public policy, perfectly aligns with my interests. While attending LSE has been a long-standing dream of mine, the SPP programme stood out to me because of its exceptional faculty, who bring both academic expertise and real-world experience. An opportunity to learn from someone like the former deputy finance minister of Mexico is too invaluable to miss. Additionally, the programme’s emphasis on practical application—through its coursework and Capstone project— provides hands-on experience for anyone ranging from students like me, who are preparing to step into the real world, to mid-career professionals, who are looking to enhance their technical skills.

What are the highlights from Welcome and your first few weeks?

My highlight from Welcome was the experience of getting to meet students and professors from so many different parts of the world, with different cultural as well as professional backgrounds. My favourite among the social events organised by the SPP was the day trip to Hampstead Heath, which provided a fantastic opportunity for the MPA-DSPP cohort to bond in a relaxed and fun setting. Our first few weeks also entailed the Data Science bootcamp with Dr Casey Kearney, which was one of the best ways to start our academic journey at LSE and ease us into the programme.

What has been a key learning for you so far?

One of my key learnings has been the importance of understanding the logic behind opposing arguments, particularly in a political context, and how this understanding is crucial in shaping well-rounded opinions. Throughout the first term, our professors consistently encouraged us to critically engage with all sides of an argument, whether it involves quantitative or qualitative reasoning. Additionally, the diverse backgrounds of my peers have not only exposed me to a wide range of perspectives but has made me reassess and refine many of my prior views in meaningful and constructive ways.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am really looking forward to the Capstone project I get to work on during my second year. Additionally, I am also really excited to take more electives, and connect with more professors and students over the course of my next few terms.

What are your main objectives whilst at LSE SPP?

One of my main objectives at LSE is to gain a wealth of insights from and make meaningful connections with the highly accomplished faculty as well as the student body. I am also looking to broaden my horizons by participating in the multiple opportunities offered by the university through their volunteer programmes, policy competitions, and public talks. Through these experiences, I’m hoping to complement my coursework to gain a holistic learning experience and perspective on my future career path.

What are your hopes/plans for your future after graduation?

After graduation, I am hoping to work in international development. While my specific interests are in Health and Education policy, I am looking to explore various avenues within international development at the beginning of my career.

Can you describe your SPP experience so far in 3 words?

Thrilling. Transformative. Multifaceted.
