Programme and year: MPP Class of 2024

Nationality: Peruvian

Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPP programme at SPP?

I have a robust background as a macroeconomist with over ten years of experience advising policymakers and CEOs. My expertise lies in macroeconomic analysis and forecasting, covering key areas such as GDP through output and expenditure approaches, the labour market, fiscal and monetary policy, as well as the financial and external sectors. I have worked across diverse sectors in my career such as the private, banking and public sector. More recently, I have been involved in academia as a research assistant at LSE in the UK.

I chose to study the MPP programme at SPP because of its distinguished academic staff, which includes professors who have excelled not only in their academic careers but also in public service, such as Professors Andrés Velasco from Chile and Vanessa Rubio-Márquez from Mexico. This blend of academic excellence and real-world experience is crucial, as the MPP programme is designed to impart the latest academic insights while addressing the practical and complex challenges facing society today.

What have been some of your takeaways from your studies? How do you plan to use these in your future career?

The MPP programme at SPP has been a challenging but immensely rewarding experience that has equipped me with new frameworks, skills, and competencies. Two takeaways are worth highlighting. First, public policy issues such as migration, health, and education are complex and multifaceted, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Second, the design of any public policy should include three key considerations: a clear objective; feasible strategies (technical, political and administrative); and an awareness of constraints and limitations.

In the short term, the frameworks, skills, and competencies I have gained will be pivotal in solidifying my expertise as a macroeconomist and excelling as a leader in a consulting firm or international organisation. In the medium to long term, I aspire to become a distinguished policymaker in Peru and Latin America, addressing significant economic and social challenges. I intend to leverage my comprehensive background to serve my country, contributing to economic growth and equitable social development. The MPP programme at LSE has been crucial in bridging the gap between my current expertise and my aspirations.

What makes you feel #partoflse?

I would highlight two key aspects. First, LSE's active engagement with major societal concerns through academic events fosters debate and discussion. For instance, events like "Power and Politics" and "LSE Election Night" provide crucial platforms to explore how politics and power shape our world. These events were especially significant in 2024, a year when nearly half the global population participated in national elections in over 60 countries, including the UK, France, India, and the upcoming US elections.

Second, from my perspective, LSE embodies diversity and a plurality of views, perspectives, and knowledge, thanks to its international student body hailing from every corner of the world. This diversity is the cornerstone for generating new ideas and knowledge that contribute positively to the transformation of our society.

What are your favourite memories of student life at SPP?

The APPS Gala in March 2024 was a highlight, and significantly strengthened the sense of community among SPP students from all programmes. It was wonderful to celebrate the end of two intense academic terms, and was the perfect blend of camaraderie and festivity to appreciate the collective journey we had undertaken.

What’s the best thing about being a SPP student?

The strong connection between students and academic staff is undoubtedly the best aspect of being an SPP student. Professors are incredibly open and approachable, treating students with respect and fostering a collaborative learning environment. Additionally, the support among students creates an extraordinary atmosphere for study. Everyone is always willing to help one another and encourage each other to excel.

Who should study the MPP?

The MPP is ideal for professionals from any academic background who are eager to make a positive difference in society. Whether you're looking to pivot your career or enhance your current role, this programme offers cutting-edge knowledge from distinguished academic staff. You will develop new competencies and skills through team projects and collaboration with peers from diverse and multidisciplinary backgrounds. This enriching experience not only broadens your personal horizons but also equips you with the tools to thrive in your professional life.

What advice would you give to anyone who is considering studying the MPP?

First, if you haven't already obtained an English language certificate, make it a priority to meet the programme's requirements. Second, reach out to MPP alumni for insights and detailed information about the programme, as this will help you determine if the MPP aligns with your professional aspirations and provides a clearer understanding of what to expect.

What are your plans and ambitions after graduation?

Currently, I am working as a Research Assistant at LSE, focusing on global economic prospects with an emphasis on the UK, Latin America, the US, and Mexico. I plan to work as a macroeconomist for a leading global consultancy company or a multilateral organization in London. Gaining international experience is crucial for my future aspirations of becoming a policymaker in Peru, where I aim to leverage this experience to address major economic and social challenges.

Do you have any practical advice for our offer holders who are preparing to join us in September?

Firstly, congratulations! You are joining a group of brilliant minds. My primary advice is to connect with fellow offer holders as soon as possible. This will help you share valuable information about starting at LSE and secure accommodation. While LSE offers student housing, it can fill up quickly, so consider sharing a private house with other MPP students who share similar passions and interests.

Secondly, be prepared for London's unpredictable weather. Winter can be cold, so bring some warm clothes from home, and maybe invest in a sturdy umbrella for the frequent rain. Spring and summer days can be quite unpredictable, so pack a variety of clothing to stay comfortable throughout the year.

Where is your favourite place in London?

As someone who enjoys running, my favorite place in London is Hyde Park. I love running through the park, taking in the beautiful views of landmarks like the Albert Memorial, Kensington Palace, and Kensington Gardens, especially the serene Italian Gardens. It's a perfect blend of scenic beauty and a great environment for outdoor activities.

Where is your favourite place on or near campus?

One of my favourite spots near LSE is Covent Garden Market, which is just a 10-minute walk away. This historic market in the heart of London offers a charming atmosphere with a variety of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options. During winter, it transforms into a spectacular Christmas destination, the perfect place to shop for unique gifts and soak up the festive spirit.

Can you describe your SPP experience in three words?

Excellence. Diversity. Networking.
