Name: Amid Aliyev

Programme: Master of Public Administration (MPA), Class of 2026

Nationality: Azerbaijani

Can you tell us about your background and why you chose to study the MPA programme at SPP?

First of all, the MPA program is well-suited to my educational background, which is in Political Science from Baku State University. Additionally, the SPP provides the best academic environment for individuals seeking to gain advanced knowledge and skills in policy, decision-making, and policymaking. This is why I have chosen SPP to pursue my goals.

Congratulations on recently completing your PhD! Can you tell us more about the topic, and how you are planning to use your previous studies during your time here at the SPP?

My PhD thesis was titled The Role and Place of the Republic of Azerbaijan in International Migration Policy. With over five years of work experience as a leading specialist at the State Migration Service, working on this topic was a natural and seamless endeavour for me. I plan to write articles and conduct research on migration policy in crisis situations, and I strongly believe that the SPP and the academic community at LSE will provide invaluable support in achieving these goals.

What are the highlights from Welcome and your first few weeks?

It was an incredible experience stepping onto the LSE campus and seeing everything I had admired on LSE’s social media sites before arriving. Welcome Week gave me a huge sense of inspiration and confidence to embark on this amazing educational journey.

What has been a key learning for you so far?

For me, learning how to analyse policy through a quantitative approach, conduct thorough research, prepare policy memos, and articulate my thoughts in English was an incredible challenge. I am deeply grateful to the entire SPP and MPA team for helping me develop these skills.

What are you most looking forward to?

During my time at LSE as a student at SPP, I look forward to enhancing my knowledge and building a strong network with real policymakers. I am eager to meet professionals in this field and share experiences with them. My primary goal is to gain the experience that will enable me to work with think tanks and UK policy institutions, ultimately becoming a true policymaker and public administrator.

Can you describe your SPP experience so far in 3 words?

Amazing. Incredible. Immersive.
