Join us for an event with Michael Reid, until recently Latin America editor at The Economist,  eminent journalist and commentator, author of influential books on Latin America and the Iberian peninsula.

Chaired by Dean Andrés Velasco, the event will focus on the current socio-economic crises faced by Latin American states, the resultant 'new wave' of populism and the rise of populist leaders, and the ever-looming question of 'what next?'

Meet our Speaker and Chair

Michael Reid (@michaelreid52) is an author, journalist and speaker, specialising in Latin American, Iberian and international affairs. In 2023 he was appointed as a Visiting Professor in Practice at the School of Public Policy, LSE. From 1994 until 2023 he was a staff journalist for The Economist. He is the author of Spain: The Trials and Triumphs of a Modern European Country (2023). Forgotten Continent: A History of the New Latin America (2017) and Brazil: The Troubled Rise of a Global Power (2014), all published by Yale University Press. He was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot Prize in 2003 for outstanding reporting on Latin America by Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He received Brazil’s Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul in 2000 for his writing on Brazil and the Mercosur region.

Andrés Velasco (@AndresVelasco) is Professor of Public Policy and Dean of the School of Public Policy at LSE. He was previously the Minister of Finance of Chile between March 2006 and March 2010.
