Programme Directors' Welcome

Dear EMPA Offer Holders,

It’s our pleasure to welcome you to the SPP’s Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA).  We look forward to working with you over the coming months to ensure you are well prepared for the first module in September 2024.

The EMPA attracts students with an amazing wealth and depth of professional experience.  Competition for places is intense and the fact we have made you an offer reflects the quality of debate, insight and analysis we think you are capable of bringing to the classroom.

The EMPA team is dedicated to making the transition from offer holder to student as smooth as possible.  If you have questions or need help please don’t hesitate to contact us.  Otherwise we very much look forward to meeting you at orientation in September and accompanying you on your EMPA journey.

Kind regards,

Charlie Bean and Dan Berliner
Programme Directors

Programme Modules and Curriculum Overview

Find out more about the modules you'll be studying as part of the EMPA programme.

Pre-arrival Module

As part of the programme we will provide a 2-day Introduction to Statistics module shortly after you start in September 2024.  For those of you who have been out of education for a while, or who do not use maths and statistics regularly at work, this module will ensure that you are ready to undertake the EMPA by quickly and effectively bringing you up to the necessary level required to understand the concepts discussed in the programme.

In the lead-up to the programme we will help you prepare by posting online pre-programme modules covering basic maths and statistics concepts.  Please do make sure you use the pre-programme modules but do not worry if you find some of this challenging, if you don't use maths regularly that would be natural. The online pre-programme modules will get you used to the terminology and some of the concepts which will be covered in more detail in September.

For a fun and accessible introduction to statistics try Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from Data (2013) by Charles Wheelan - see reading list below.

Suggested Reading

The following books and podcasts will get you into the right mode of thinking to tackle the many questions posed by the EMPA:

Ben Goldacre (2009), Bad Science, Harper Perennial, London

Charles Wheelan (2013), Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data, Norton, London

Naked Statistics is also used on the Introduction to Statistics and Empirical Methods for Public Policy modules and it is recommended that you purchase a copy to help you prepare.

Please bear in mind there will be reading for the Introduction to Statistics module and the first Policy in Practice weekend.

Please make sure you access the full suggested full reading list here.
