Welcome new LSE School of Public Policy students

In September we welcomed over 250 new students to the start of their studies at LSE School of Public Policy (SPP). Our newest cohort represent 57 nationalities and a range of academic backgrounds including economics, law, finance, social sciences, international relations and engineering.

Our students also bring a range of prior professional experience, from recent graduates to 25+ years professional experience with expertise in governance, law, consultancy, financial services, international relations, military, healthcare, technology and NGOs.

The diverse experiences of the cohort make for a dynamic learning environment where students draw on their unique experiences to engage with their peers, expert faculty and practitioners in active discussions about some of the world’s most pressing policy challenges.

This year saw a special celebration as we welcomed our first cohorts of MPA-Data Science for Public Policy (MPA-DSPP) students and Sciences Po MPA double degree students. We also welcomed back our 20th cohort of MPA students to their second year of study, where they are preparing to put their first year learnings into practice with their Capstone Projects.

Throughout welcome activities, students were welcomed by SPP faculty, students, alumni and careers and support teams. Dean Andres Velasco also hosted an individual welcome and Q&A for each programme cohort he shared his insights and advice with the future policymakers.

He emphasised the key relationship between academia and policy-making in practice and noted how SPP’s mission closely connects to LSE’s motto; to know the causes of things for the betterment of society.

He encouraged our new students to challenge themselves and expand their horizons, learn from the diverse backgrounds of their new classmates, make new life-long friends and most of all enjoy their time at LSE SPP!

Welcome new and returning students. We look forward to the learning journey ahead and to seeing you make a positive impact in public policy around the world.
