Professor Luis Garicano, a leading scholar and former Member of the European Parliament, has been appointed as Professor of Public Policy.
The LSE School of Public Policy (SPP) is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Luis Garicano, as Full Professor of Public Policy. An economist by training, Professor Garicano received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1998. From 2019 to 2022 he was a member of the European Parliament, serving as Vice-President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party and also Vice-President of the Renew Europe grouping of European political parties.
Professor Garicano combines experience in politics with an outstanding career as an academic. Prior to entering politics he was a Full Professor of Economics and Strategy at LSE from 2009 to 2017 after having been Assistant, Associate and Full Professor at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago. After leaving politics he has been a Visiting Professor in Columbia Business School and Chicago Booth, while on leave of absence from IE Business School. He has also held visiting appointments at MIT and London Business School.
In 2007, Professor Garicano received the Banco Herrero prize for the best economist in Spain under 40 years old. His research, which focuses on inequality and productivity, determinants of economic performance, and the impact of globalization and information technology on the organisation of firms and economic growth, has been published in a number of leading journals including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Economic Literature and the Journal of Economic Perspectives.
