Luisa is a Credit Risk Senior Officer at IDB Invest
Luisa Fernanda Higuera Joseph, EMPA
My substantial experience as a financial analyst, working closely with public sector clients, sparked my curiosity about how public policies shape economies and societies. This curiosity led me to pursue the Executive Master in Public Administration (EMPA) to deepen my understanding of how public policies are designed and implemented, and how they can be leveraged to address critical issues such as poverty and inequality in my country.
The knowledge and skills gained during the EMPA have been invaluable in my current role as Credit Risk Senior Officer at IDB Invest. The opportunity to combine my professional expertise in financial analysis and risk management, with a deeper understanding of public policy, has enabled me to approach my work with a more strategic and comprehensive mindset.
The program also helped me refine essential soft skills, such as leadership, communication, and networking, which have been instrumental in expanding my professional relationships and building high-performing teams. By integrating social, environmental, and financial factors into my work, I am better equipped to tackle challenges across industries, ensuring sound credit risk management while driving positive societal impact through sustainable loans and investments.
The program also allowed me to explore areas that have always been close to my heart—development, sustainability, and equity—while offering the flexibility to continue advancing professionally. Studying in London, a dynamic hub for international business and policymaking, provided me with a unique learning environment, surrounded by world-class faculty and peers from diverse backgrounds. This exposure not only deepened my understanding of public policy but also challenged me to think critically about the role policies play in shaping the future.
The faculty at LSE are exceptional. The staff not only possess outstanding academic credentials but also bring invaluable real-world experience to their teaching. Their ability to combine theoretical knowledge with practical insight provided us with a rich learning experience. They fostered an environment that encouraged critical thinking and intellectual curiosity, which has been essential in my subsequent approach to public policy challenges.
Additionally, my cohort was composed of professionals from a wide range of sectors and regions, which enriched our discussions and broadened my perspective. The diverse backgrounds of my classmates allowed me to approach policy issues from multiple viewpoints, enhancing my ability to think creatively and collaborate effectively.
