Notes. The Exam Sub-Board 'local rules' differ from Section 2 of the Classification Scheme (the “Scheme”) in only two ‘boundary’ cases, one for the award of Distinction, and another for the award of Merit. The boundary conditions are as follows:

• For the award of Distinction, the local rules differ from the Section 2 of the Scheme only if the student has exactly 4 classification marks at Distinction, and exactly 1 classification mark at Fail. In this case, to qualify for a Distinction, the aggregate in the non-failed courses must be at least 490.

• For the award of Merit, the local rules differ from Section 2 of the Scheme only if the student has 4 classification marks at Merit, 3 classification marks at Pass, and 1 classification mark at Fail. In this case, to qualify for a Merit, the aggregate in the non-failed courses must be at least 420.

2.1. For the award of Distinction, a student must have:
(a) five or more classification marks at Distinction level; or
(b) exactly four classification marks at Distinction level and no Fail mark;  or
(c) exactly four classification marks at Distinction level, and exactly one Fail mark, and an aggregate mark of at least 490 (in the non-failed courses).

2.2. For the award of Merit, a student must have:
(a) five or more classification marks at Merit or Distinction level; or
(b) three classification marks at Merit or Distinction level, and one further classification mark at Distinction level; or
(c) exactly four classification marks at Merit, and exactly four classification marks at Pass; or

(d) exactly four classification marks at Merit, and exactly one Fail mark, and an aggregate mark of at least 420 (in the non-failed courses)
