This course is available on the LLM (extended part-time), LLM (full-time), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (Human Resource Management/CIPD), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (International Employment Relations/CIPD), MSc in Human Resources and Organisations (Organisational Behaviour), MSc in Inequalities and Social Science and University of Pennsylvania Law School LLM Visiting Students. This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.
This course has a limited number of places and demand is typically high. This may mean that you’re not able to get a place on this course.
Course content
Regulation of the content and the form of the employment relation. The contract of employment, including express and implied terms and the scope of employment law. Regulation of minimum wage and working time. Protection against discrimination in the workplace. Discipline and protection from dismissal and termination of employment. Business reorganisation and economic dismissals. Freedom of association and the right to strike. The approach involves theoretical perspectives, economic analysis, comparative law of employment, and examination of relevant European law.
Teaching
This course will have two hours of teaching content each week in Michaelmas Term. There will be a Reading Week in Week 6 of Michaelmas Term.
Formative coursework
Students will be expected to produce 1 essay in the MT.

Detailed syllabus of weekly readings will be available and the materials can all be accessed through Moodle. Hugh Collins, Employment Law, 2nd edn (Oxford University Press, 2010), Chapters 1-9.
Assessment
Exam (100%, duration: 2 hours, reading time: 15 minutes) in the summer exam period.
Candidates are allowed to take an unannotated copy of a collection of statutory materials into the examination.
