Qualitative Analysis in Management

Availability

This course is compulsory on the Global MSc in Management, Global MSc in Management (CEMS MiM) and Global MSc in Management (MBA Exchange). This course is not available as an outside option.

The course is designed for GMiM students who are likely to have little or no previous experience of qualitative methodologies.

Course content

This course provides students with a critical understanding of qualitative management research and problem solving, with an emphasis on methods and techniques which will be useful and relevant to them in their future careers. A range of methods will be used and critically appraised, including case study research, ethnography, narrative analysis, and internet-based methods. The course will cover: research design; data collection; data handling techniques; methods of analysis; constructing a contribution; and authoring a research report. These are methods, skills and techniques which are used both formally and informally in academia, consultancy and the workplace.

Teaching

15 hours of lectures and 9 hours of seminars in the LT. 1 hour and 30 minutes of lectures in the ST.

Students on this course will have a reading week in Week 6 of LT, in line with departmental policy

Formative coursework

500 word research proposal in LT. Classes are based around the critical analysis and practical application of methods and techniques introduced in the lectures and further explored through the readings. Formative feedback is provided during seminars.

Assessment

Exam (50%, duration: 2 hours) in the summer exam period.
Project (50%, 3500 words) in the LT.
