This course is compulsory on the MSc in Management. This course is not available as an outside option.

Course content

The aims of this course are to provide a basic grounding in the management literatures covering disciplines relating to financial control, marketing and management science. Students will be provided with an overview of each discipline with the aim that they acquire a basic working knowledge of each. The course will cover origins and disciplinary boundaries, the foundations of these fields in the social science disciplines, core concepts, practical applications and current state of play and debate. Weekly topics inlcude:

3: Valuing and Managing Costs

4: Balanced Performance Measurement

5: Measuring Shareholder Value

6: Representing a Firm’s Financial Condition: 2

7: Marketing 1

8: Marketing 2

9: Marketing 3

10: Origins of Management Science

Teaching

12 hours of lectures, 9 hours of lectures, 2 hours of lectures, 18 hours of seminars and 3 hours of seminars in the LT.

Weeks 1-6: 1 two hour lecture and 1 three hour case discussion, weekly.

Weeks 7-9: 1 three hour lecture and case discussion, weekly.

Week 10: 1 two hour lecture and 1 three hour case discussion.

Formative coursework

Students will be expected to produce 1 essay in the LT.

Week 10: Keys, P. (1994). Understanding the Process of Operational Research.

Assessment

Exam (75%, duration: 2 hours, reading time: 15 minutes) in the main exam period.
Essay (25%, 1500 words) in the LT.
