This course is available as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit and to General Course students.
Pre-requisites
Students must have completed Introduction to Political Science (GV101).
Course content
The course is concerned with theories and case studies of democratic transformations. It focuses on several different parts of the world including Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, China, India, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union. It analyses processes of transition to democracy in historical context and also analyses relations between democracy, democratisation and economic development in a global capitalist economy.
Teaching
10 hours of lectures and 10 hours of classes in the MT. 10 hours of lectures and 10 hours of classes in the LT. 2 hours of classes in the ST.
Formative coursework
Students will be expected to produce 2 essays in the MT and LT.
