This course is available on the MSc in Law and Accounting, Master of Laws and Master of Laws (extended part-time study). This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.

This course will be relevant to the following LLM specialisms: Information Technology, Media and Communications Law, Intellectual Property Law, Corporate and Commercial Law, International Business Law, and Competition, Innovation and Trade Law.

This course provides a comprehensive foundation to patent law and introduces the basics of patent drafting and prosecution as well as arguments for and against using patents to induce innovation at a generic level. Students will address the central patentability criteria of novelty, inventive step, industrial application and sufficiency of disclosure. The course will also consider the inherent patentability of inventions incorporating software and biotechnology. The central aim of this course is to gain in-depth knowledge of patent law doctrine and familiarity with the different contexts of innovation and technology. Topics covered will include: Novelty Inventive Step Industrial Applicability Sufficiency of Disclosure Computer implemented inventions and business methods Patentability of Biotechnology Patent Infringement and claim construction

This is a Michaelmas term course, and consists of 10 weekly two-hour seminars in variable format including lecture-discussions and student-led seminars.

All students are expected to produce one 2,000 word formative essay during the course.

Weekly reading will include core chapters from books, cases and articles from law reviews.
