This course is available on the MSc in International Affairs (LSE and Peking University), MSc in International Relations, MSc in International Relations (LSE and Sciences Po), MSc in International Relations (Research), MSc in International Relations Theory, MSc in Politics and Government in the European Union, MSc in Politics and Government in the European Union (LSE and Sciences Po), MSc in Social Policy (European and Comparative Social Policy) and MSc in Theory and History of International Relations. This course is available with permission as an outside option to students on other programmes where regulations permit.

The course places the development of EU policy-making in its international context. It examines the impact of the external factors on the evolution of common policies and the external impact of common policies. The USA and West European regional integration; the single market and social policies; finance and Economic and Monetary Union; trade policy; the pursuit of a common foreign policy, with a security and defence dimension; environmental policy; police cooperation and counter-terrorism, immigration and asylum policy; enlargement as a policy and a process. 10 hours of lectures and 15 hours of seminars in the LT. 1 hour of lectures in the ST.

Seminar presentations are allocated at the first meeting of the seminar. Two 2,000-word essays are set and marked by the seminar teacher.
