Choice Group Seminar by Tomi Francis (Oxford University): ‘Anonymity, Infinity, and the Separateness of Persons’

13 November, 4:30 pm6:00 pm

Abstract: An old puzzle in infinite ethics shows us that the infinitary versions of the anonymity and pareto principles are inconsistent. This inconsistency raises two challenges for those of us who find both principles attractive. First: we must decide which of the two infinitary principles we should reject, which (if either) we should accept, and why. Second: if we want to retain both principles in finite cases, we must provide a justification for at least one of them which does not extent to the infinite case. In this talk, I shall attempt to meet both of these challenges, focusing especially on the second.
