The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience is hiring a Research Officer in Animal Sentience (Animals and AI). Application deadline: 6 May 2025.
The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience at LSE Philosophy aims to support the scientific study of animal sentience and to use the science to design better policies, laws and ways of caring for other animals. Our research will be focused on achieving significant, long-term ethical impact (‘ethical moonshots’). We are looking for a Research Officer in Animal Sentience (Animals and AI) who is strongly committed to our mission and able to advance our “Animals and AI” priority area.
The Research Officer will develop a coherent, sustained programme of research in the context of the Centre’s research agenda and its “Animals and AI” priority area. They will work in a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating harmoniously with other team members, assisting constructively with the day-to-day running of the Centre and fulfilment of its key deliverables. They will take a lead role in organizing workshops, seminars and conferences and engage effectively in impact activities.
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with the following essential qualifications and experience:
- Completed or near-completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline by the start date.
- Strong track record in writing peer-reviewed journal articles and the ability to develop a sustained research programme within the “Animals and AI” priority area.
- Demonstrated ability to research complex ideas and contribute original, innovative work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences and place research in broader contexts.
- Experience in organising research events (workshops, seminars, conferences) and engaging in knowledge exchange and impact activities.
- Ability to work both collaboratively in a research team and independently on specific tasks, while managing time effectively.
- Strong dedication to the mission of The Jeremy Coller Centre for Animal Sentience, with a flexible, creative approach and attention to detail.
