About me

Professor Rosenhead has been a member of staff at the School since 1967 and Professor of Operational Research since 1987. He is now officially retired, but still teaches and researches here. He was a Labour Party candidate for Parliament in 1966 and was active in the British Society for Social Responsibility in Science for 20 years, including a period as Chair. He is currently Chair of the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine (BRICUP). He was awarded the President's Medal of the British Operational Research Society in 1979, its Goodeve Medal in 1987, and its Beale Medal in 1992. He was also President of the Society in 1986-7. In December 2010 he was appointed IFORS Distinguished Lecturer for the Association of Asia Pacific Operational Research Societies (APORS) regional conference. This honour, awarded by the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (IFORS), recognises distinguished OR scholars. In 2014 he gave the Harold Larnder Memorial Lecture of the Canadian Operational Research Society. From 2000-14 he was advisor to the Venezuelan Minister of Planning and Finance Minister.

Professor Rosenhead took a degree in mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 1959 and an MSc in Statistics at University College London in 1961. After this he worked as an OR practitioner, first at United Steel in Sheffield and then in the consulting firm SIGMA in London. He spent 1966-7 and 1974-5 at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School's Management Science Centre in departments headed by Russ Ackoff.
