Professor Youngjin Yoo
We are delighted to announce that esteemed Information Systems professor, Youngjin Yoo, will be joining the LSE Department of Management in July 2025.
Professor Yoo will be joining the department from the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, where he is currently Elizabeth M. and William C. Treuhaft Professor in Entrepreneurship, Associate Dean of Research and Faculty, and Professor of Information Systems at the Department of Design and Innovation.
His work has been published in leading academic journals such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Organization Science and Academy of Management Journal and he is currently the Senior Editor of Information Systems Research and has been the Senior Editor of MIS Quarterly, the Journal of AIS, and the Journal Information Technology, among others
He has worked with leading companies, including LG, Samsung, Intel, Penske, Goodyear Tire, Progressive Insurance, and NASA, and worked at the University Hospitals in Cleveland as the Innovation Architect overseeing their digital strategy.
Speaking about his appointment at LSE and what attracted him to the Department of Management, Professor Yoo explained: “LSE’s Department of Management Information Systems Group is one of the oldest academic and most innovative units in our field, with faculty whose contributions have been immense – always creative and forward looking, with a sharp angle that others don’t have. I feel like I can undertake work at LSE that’s grand and at an ambitious level.
“In the process of joining LSE”, Professor Yoo continued, “I met with Professor Larry Kramer, LSE’s President and Vice Chancellor, and discussed the five challenges to social sciences he articulated in his inaugural lecture. One of these challenges is new technology, which is not only an important topic on its own, but it also affects every other challenge.
“It is critical to explore how we can elevate the conversation at LSE and beyond regarding the crucial role that technology plays so that the conversation on technology doesn’t happen in isolation – it affects popular government, political economy, the climate, and inequality, each of the other challenges that Professor Kramer mentioned. This is something that really attracted me to LSE.”
Upon joining the Department of Management, Professor Yoo will become the Faculty Group Lead for the Information Systems Faculty Group.
Professor Sarah Ashwin, Head of the Department of Management, said “Professor Yoo is a transformative appointment for the Department of Management and LSE. Building on a proud tradition, he will keep us at the forefront of understanding new digital technologies.”
Commenting on his current research focus Professor Yoo said: “One of my active research areas that I intend to continue at LSE is studying how to create and maintain sustainable, equitable, and responsible digital infrastructure and ecosystems. Also, and particularly pertinent in today’s world, I’m interested in changes in the nature of technology as AI becomes more mature to truly understand what AI brings to the table and how the current generation of AI differs from previous generations.
Finally, we asked Professor Yoo about his vision for his time at LSE. He expressed his desire to bring the topic of digital technology to the forefront of the conversation at LSE, linking it to other disciplines studied across the School.
“We could fully leverage the intellectual strength of LSE as a social sciences university,” Professor Yoo explained, “and mobilise it to highlight and amplify the field of digital technology, creating something we haven’t seen before. This is something I am truly excited about, including working with our alumni base and corporate partners, so that LSE becomes a vibrant, global centre of excellence on anything related to digital technology and the future of our society in all dimensions.”
