Management PhD Student Wins Best Developmental Paper Award

We are incredibly grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to contribute to such a prestigious platform.

Rashi Sonal, PhD candidate in Organisational Behaviour

We are delighted to announce that Rashi Sonal, a final year PhD Candidate in Organisational Behaviour in the Department of Management, has been awarded the Best Developmental Paper award in the Identity Track at the British Academy of Management 2024 Conference.

Rashi’s paper, titled ‘Crystallizing Nebulous Identities: How New Work Identities are Born and Maintained in the face of Image Discrepancy’, was co-written with Dr Niranjan Janardhanan, Assistant Professor in LSE’s Department of Management, and Professor Elaine Hollensbe of the Carl H. Lindner College of Business.

On winning the award, Rashi said, "We are deeply honoured to have received the Best Developmental Paper award at the British Academy of Management conference. The conference brought together an inspiring community of scholars and practitioners who are shaping the future of management research.

“Our paper explores how independent workers, such as Instagram content creators, construct their work identity and the challenges they face in doing so. We believe it sheds light on an emerging and underrepresented segment of the workforce. Winning this award is a testament to the importance of understanding work dynamics and recognising workers’ challenges and their strategies for succeeding in these nascent sectors.

“We are incredibly grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to contribute to such a prestigious platform."

This year was the 38th edition of the British Academy of Management Conference, taking place from 2 – 6 September at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, UK.
