Dr Edgar Whitley, Associate Professor of Information Systems at LSE’s Department of Management, has been nominated in the inaugural Good ID awards.
Good ID is a global movement made up of individuals, businesses, and governments who campaign for digital dignity, data protection, human-centred technologies, and quality identification programs.
Dr Whitley, who has been studying digital identity systems for over 15 years, has been nominated for an award in the Security category.
In the coming weeks, Good ID will be running the inaugural #GoodID Awards through their Twitter channel, with an aim to celebrate the digital identity community and the figures within it. The public can cast their vote here until Thursday 22 October 2020.
“It is an honour to be recognised by Good ID for the research and policy engagement I have been doing around providing secure digital identity systems,” said Dr Whitley.
Dr Whitley is co-chair of the Privacy and Consumer Advisory Group to the Government Digital Service and GOV.UK and is an Advisory Group member for the Ada Lovelace independent review of the governance of biometric data. He has advised governments in Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, India, Jamaica, Japan and Mexico about the political, technological and social challenges of effective identity policies.
In addition to the award, Dr Whitley has also featured on a panel event for The UK Internet Governance Forum (UK IGF) earlier this month. The UK IGF provides the space for national discussions of key public policy issues related to technology.
Dr Whitley, along with other industry experts, discussed how to best ensure consumer trust in the use of digital identities using the NHSX’s COVID-tracing app as an indicative case study in a session titled ‘Building Trust in Digital Identity’.
