We are delighted to share that a team of colleagues from the Department of Management have recently published a new business case study: 2U or not 2U: GetSmarter's Edtech Expansion Beyond South Africa.

Dr Christine Côté, Associate Professor (Education) of International Business, Professor Saul Estrin, Emeritus Professor of Management Economics and Strategy, and Katherine Nunner, former LSE Research Associate and Alum (MSc Development Management, 2016), published the case focused on the South African start-up firm GetSmarter and its global success within the Edtech (educational technology) industry.

This case was written on the back of company visits to GetSmarter, a South African Edtech startup, during the LSE Executive Global Master’s in Management (EGMiM) student’s study visit to Cape Town as part of the programme’s core course on International Business Strategy and Emerging Markets.

It examines at GetSmarter’s opportunities provided by its South Africa location, where it grew rapidly from a domestic platform firm to quickly entered the global arena, as well as the challenges it faced with respect to growth and funding which led to its consideration of a merger with US firm 2U.

The case has been successfully taught in undergraduate, MSc and Executive MSc classes at LSE, and is available to purchase from The Case Centre.
