PhD Programmes

2020-21 academic year.

The Department of Management’s PhD programmes relaunched in 2020-21 as an integrated programme in Management. We offer specialisms in Economics and Management, Employment Relations and Human Resources, Information Systems and Innovation, Marketing, and Organisational Behaviour.

During the first years of study, our programmes offer advanced courses in the field of Management, quantitative and qualitative research methods. Once students are upgraded to the PhD, they develop research practices under the guidance of supervisors and engage in a critical enquiry specialising in their own field.

Our programmes focus on providing opportunities for students to learn about research in Management subject areas outside of their own specialism. We do this by offering an integrated seminar series which brings students together in direct contact with faculty from across the Department’s faculty research groups to explore research questions, engage in comparative critiques of research methodologies, and to gain a deeper understanding of the unique research challenges within diverse subject specialisms. Another element of our programmes is students’ immediate immersion in the work of research, under the direct supervision and guidance of faculty in a series of semi-structured ‘research practicums’. These five-to-ten-week placements require students to attend specialist seminars, support research activities, and take guided methodological training in specific skills. By working closely alongside academics, students can experience early on the rigour and demands of academic publishing.

After upgrading onto the PhD programme and passing the PhD Review, students are expected to focus on the research and writing of their thesis, the continued development of research ideas for publication, participation in relevant training courses, and career development activities. Students attend regular Faculty Group seminars and teach within the Department and the LSE Summer School. We have a strong cohort of exceptional students from top ranking academic institutions across the world, and we look forward to the programme continuing to expand over coming yeas. The Department also has an active Visiting Research Student programme which helps contribute to the diversity, community, and networking between students at different stages in their journey to academia. The Department has a successful history of placing our students in world leading institutions and business schools including Harvard Business School, University of Oxford, Aalto University, University of Oslo, Bocconi University, LSE, Kings College London, and the Rotterdam School of Business. We are ambitious in our objective to make a significant contribution to the next generation of academic leaders in the field of Management and we look forward to updating our alumni community on the progress of our research students.
