Freedom of Information
As a public authority, LSE is obliged to meet the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act 2000.
The Act makes two basic provisions:
- That LSE should maintain a list of the information it makes available as a matter of routine, called the Publication Scheme
- That from 1 January 2005, any person making a request for information is entitled to be informed in writing whether LSE holds the information specified in the request, and if that is the case, to have that information communicated to them.
The FoI Act complements the Data Protection Act 1998, which makes provision for the access and proper management of information relating to living people. There are also the Environmental Information Regulations which cover information relating to how the School interacts with the environment.

From 25 May 2018, we will be processing your personal data in line with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation under the lawful bases of contract, legal and public task for educational purposes and legitimate interests for the purposes of marketing.
How we store your data
All data supplied to LSE is held securely and is treated confidentially in accordance with the 1998 Data Protection Act. The purpose of the 1998 Data Protection Act is to regulate "the processing of information relating to individuals, including the obtaining, holding, use or disclosure of such information" by 'Data Controllers', like LSE. In other words, it requires us to process, store and use your personal information in a way that is fair, proportionate, secure and justified. We uphold this commitment by adhering to the eight principles of Data Protection.
Data is not disclosed to external organisations other than agents contracted by the School directly for purposes benefiting the School or its alumni.
The Department stores some data in Salesforce. The Salesforce privacy and security policies can be viewed online here: privacy overview, security statement. If you have any concerns about your data being stored in Salesforce, please contact the LSE’s Data Protection Officer at glpd.info.rights@lse.ac.uk. If you wish to be removed from the system, please contact Dom.Operations@lse.ac.uk, and you will be removed within 21 days.
More information about the Data Protection Act is available on the Information Commissioner’s Office website. The Information Commissioner’s Office is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
