Public engagement

LSE’s private lawyers’ work has a substantial influence not only on other academics but also on the legal profession and public life. Here are a few recent examples of our public engagement and impact:

Recent judicial citations

  • Neil Duxbury’s book Dicta and Dissent has been cited by the United States Supreme Court in Loper Bright Enterprises v Raimondo, 603 US ___ (2024)
  • Rachel Leow has been cited by the UK Supreme Court (Trustees of the Barry Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses [2023] UKSC 15), by the High Court of Australia (Productivity Partners Pty Ltd v Australian Competition and Consumer Commission [2024] HCA 27), and in numerous Singaporean cases
  • Tim Liau has been cited by the High Court of Australia in Mallonland Pty Ltd v Advanta Seeds Pty Ltd [2024] HCA 25 and AZC20 v Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs [2023] HCA 26, and by the Singapore courts in numerous cases including the Court of Appeal’s UniCredit Bank AG v Glencore Singapore Pte Ltd [2023] SGCA 41
  • Paul MacMahon’s work has been by the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Supreme Court of Wyoming

Policy papers and submissions to public bodies

  • Joe Spooner has published a report of workshop proceedings for the UK Insolvency Service Personal Insolvency Review 
  • Sarah Paterson has published policy articles for the Butterworths Journal of International Banking and Finance Law, a leading practitioner publication
  • Paul MacMahon has responded to the Law Commission’s consultation on the Arbitration Act 1996, and provided expert advice on English law in Dutch legal proceedings
  • Rachel Leow has co-authored a commissioned report submitted to the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports of Singapore, “Redefining “Charity”: Modernizing Charity Legislation” (with Tang Hang Wu and Albert Teo)

Blogging, Podcasts and Video

  • Paul MacMahon posts regularly about recent UK case law on LinkedIn to several thousand followers. He has blogged about the law of assignment, and recorded an episode for the podcast Case by Case
  • Nick Sage has recorded a series of lectures on the theory of contract law for massolit.io, which provides lectures from university professors designed to be accessible to high school students
  • Sarah Paterson has recorded a podcast on restructuring plans with barrister Georgina Peters for Debtwired!

Public lectures and presentations

  • Joe Spooner has spoken at a public webinar organised by the World Bank Financial Inclusion and Infrastructure global team. He gave a keynote at the International Association of Consumer Law conference at Girton College, Cambridge
  • Alex Waghorn and Sarah Worthington have participated with members of the bar and judiciary in a panel discussion, hosted by 3VB Chambers, of the book Borderlines in Private Law (Oxford University Press 2024)
  • Tim Liau, Sarah Worthington, and Nick Sage have spoken at a public book launch to mark the publication of Standing in Private Law(Oxford University Press 2023)
  • Sarah Paterson has given a Current Legal Problems lecture on distressed private equity companies. She regularly speaks at the Insolvency Lawyers’ Association practitioner conference, including chairing a panel discussion on the controversial ‘Rule in Gibbs’. She has also participated policy-oriented webinars for insolvency practitioners, including 'Restructuring Plans: Where Next?' Her work was selected for the ‘Forward Thinking’ conference organised by The Insolvency Service, an executive agency sponsored by the Department for Business and Trade.
  • Charlie Webb, Tim Liau, and Rachel Leow have spoken at a symposium on the law of restitution attended by academics and leading members of the legal profession at Keble College, Oxford
  • Hugh Collins has given the Modern Law Review’s annual Chorley Lecture entitled ‘Fat Cats, Production Networks, and the Right to Fair Pay’
  • Astrid Sanders has joined LSE colleagues and barrister Alice Carse in an online public event, ‘Working from Home: legal issues arising form the “new normal”

Conferences and workshops hosted

  • Emmanuel Voyiakis, Tim Liau, Nick Sage, and Andrew Summers have convened the LSE Private Law Forum, which regularly hosts discussion of work in progress and recent publications on private law, attended by academics from the LSE and other universities and legal practitioners
  • Emmanuel Voyiakis has co-organised the London Private Law Theory group’s series or regular workshops for works in progress
  • Rachel Leow has co-organised the conference ‘Negative Externalities of Corporate Behaviour’ at Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford
  • Nick Sage has hosted a number of workshops and book symposia including on James Penner’s Property Rights: A Re-Examination and Peter Benson’s Justice in Transactions
  • Tim Liau has co-organised a panel discussion at Oxford Brookes University of Professor Robert Stevens’ book, The Law of Restitution
