LSE Law students shortlisted for Best Team at LawWorks Pro Bono Awards

20 March 2025

We are delighted that LSE Law School’s European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) Intervention Clinic has been shortlisted for Best Team at the Attorney General LawWorks Student Pro Bono Awards.

The ECtHR clinic is a unique initiative that intervenes in ECtHR cases involving pivotal issues around digital freedom. Under the leadership of Dr Martin Husovec and in collaboration with the European Information Society Institute (EISi), the project identifies cases where expert input can shape the Court’s interpretation of human rights law. This year our team of five LLM students worked against the clock to prepare submissions in the case of Boyarov v Ukraine, a significant case examining the balance between national security and freedom of expression in the context of state-imposed website blocking. Each team member took on individual research tasks, collaborating closely during weekly meetings to refine their strategy and ensure a cohesive, high-quality submission. Huge well done to Martin and his dedicated students: Marianne Bellavance, Siddharth Aiyanna Nadikerianda Belliappa, Beth Doherty, Aown Shahzad, and Idil Zoraloglu!

The project offers a unique opportunity for LSE LLM students to engage directly with live cases, influencing the Court’s decision-making process by providing well-researched legal arguments. Over its 5 years of operation, the project has built a strong reputation, with previous interventions cited by the Strasbourg Court in its judgments, underscoring the Clinic’s impact on the development of human rights law.
