Mona Paulsen and LSE Law organised a session, A Greener International Economic Order: Mitigation of Unilateral Policies and Equitable Outcomes for All, for the WTO Public Forum 2024 on the Centre Stage, moderated by the Permanent Representative and Ambassador for Barbados, Matthew Wilson. The session examined various areas for WTO reform, including environmental standards and unilateral climate measures. Mona Paulsen presented her research concerning economic security. She argued that the WTO security exceptions are not a long-term solution for persistent, unpredictable challenges and may even preclude multilateral approaches to anticipate and mitigate economic security risks.

Dr Paulsen was, in addition, an interviewee on a recent edition of TradeSplaining, a podcast discussing the evolving dynamics of global trade, dispute resolution, and the intersection of trade and national security.

Dr Paulsen has also recently contributed to the published TradeExperettes Ten “Quick Wins” for Re-globalization and Resilience in Trade Reporthttps://www.tradeexperettes.org/quick-win-2024/quick-win-2-7. Her submission is entitled, Design an economic security safeguards mechanism to reform the WTO security exception. Her policy brief argues that WTO Members should appreciate security as more than an exception to WTO rules and principles. It explains how they could build a new mechanism for economic security issues using the WTO’s safeguards procedures as a model.
