Dr Luke McDonagh contributes to Ukrainian government round table on intellectual property

On the 9th of January 2025 Dr Luke McDonagh presented his work on patents and trade secrets to a Ukrainian government roundtable event entitled “Property and Title in Intellectual Property Rights”. The event was organised by the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovation together with the Institute of Law-making and Scientific-Legal Expertise of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Dr Luke McDonagh’s presentation concerned the extent to which Intellectual Property Rights such as patents and trade secrets can be considered as property under the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights, including how the qualified right of property is weighed proportionately against other rights such as freedom of expression and the right to health. 

Participants at the event included Professor Olena Orliuk, Director of the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property; Prof Nataliia Kuznietsova (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv); Dr Olga Gurgula (Brunel University London); Professor Oleksii Kot, Director of the Institute of Law-Making and Scientific-Legal Expertise of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Dmytro Huzii, Acting Head of the Department of Intellectual Property and Innovations of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine; and Illya Kostin, Head of the Department for Intellectual Property of the Main Military Justice Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
