It is with great sadness that we have received the news that Joe Jacob has passed away. Joe was a member of the LSE Law Department for nearly 40 years, until 2008. We remember him from our days in the Old Building and from lunches with him, with lots of laughter, in the Senior Dining Room.

Joe was a stalwart of the Law School from 1970, until he retired as Reader. He published several books in medical law, well before it was fashionable. In later years his great interests were public law and civil justice. His “The Republican Crown” contained a huge amount of information on the history of the administrative state in Britain. In civil justice he followed in the footsteps of his father, Sir Jack Jacob, a great proceduralist, but moved the subject on in books such as “Civil Justice in the Age of Human Rights”, where he addressed underlying principles of procedure and until then neglected subjects such as the impact of Article 6 ECHR on procedural rules. Joe was welcoming, supportive, and friendly and one for enjoying a good laugh. He was a keen amateur photographer and after retiring from the LSE went professional.

Our deepest sympathies go to his widow, Miriam, and his family.
