Join us as author Sungmin Rho discusses her recently published book Atomized Incorporation: Chinese Workers and the Aftermath of China's Rise.

The panel will discuss debates around how China copes with the aftermath of its economic rise, as export-led growth becomes no longer sustainable.

Meet our speakers and chair:

Sungmin Rho, Associate Professor of International Relations and Political Science at The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva, Switzerland. Her research examines the interplay between economic changes and social and political conflicts. Her recent book, Atomized Incorporation: Chinese Workers and the Aftermath of China’s Rise (Cambridge University Press, 2023), investigates the perceptions, beliefs and protest behavior of migrant factory workers to uncover the implications of state-labour relations in contemporary China. The second book project examines the ways in which young students and workers engage in more subtle forms of non-cooperation in the face of increased competition in the labour market, particularly from a gendered perspective.

Discussants:

Boram Lee, Assistant Professor of International Political Economy, LSE.

Ruofan Ma, PhD student in the Department of Government at Harvard University.

Chair:

Natalya Naqvi, Assistant Professor of International Political Economy, LSE.
