What can I do?

Contributing information to the project
The best way to contribute is by providing information from direct correspondence with MPs or local election candidates themselves.
We remind participants that engagement and debate with candidates and elected representatives, through any means of communication, should be conducted with respect and politeness, especially when your views differ.
Each constituency and council page provides information on the MP or local election candidates, including contact details and their views where available.
Where we do not have information on your MP or local election candidates, please contact them using the relevant template email, and let us know how they responded.
If you already have information from previous correspondence, or other sources such as local election leaflets, please send it to us. Please also share with us any campaign materials you feel misrepresent the science of climate change.
Where we have information available, please contact your candidate anyway. The more people who raise the importance of climate change to how they vote, the better.
You can contact the project at climate.election@lse.ac.uk with any replies or other information. Please remove any identifying information (e.g. your postcode) before sending.
Contacting your candidate
Below are template letters for MPs and candidates for local elections. Please personalise them as you see fit. If candidates from other parties have already responded and have information listed, you might like to draw attention to this to encourage a response.
Where we have been unable to provide direct contact details, we will list details for local party offices, where you can direct your enquiries. Please ask for your email to be forwarded to the relevant MP or local election candidate, or for an email to be provided so you can contact them directly.
If you are meeting your MP or local election candidate face-to-face to ask these questions, please send us a summary of their responses which we can confirm with them directly.
Parliamentary elections
Dear [NAME],
I writing to you in your capacity as [MP/ candidate] for [NAME OF CONSTITUENCY], where I live. I am very concerned about climate change and I would like to know where you stand on this issue.
In particular, do you fully support the UK’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050, to the target for 2030 announced at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, and to the target for 2035 announced at COP29 in Baku in 2024? Will you work to ensure that the UK does not shy away from these commitments?
While the country faces many issues, this is one that is particularly important to me.
I intend to share your response with ‘Climate Election,’ a project at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science. They have no interest in telling anyone how to vote, but want to ensure that your views on climate change and net zero are available to help voters make an informed choice.
Local council elections
Dear [NAME OF CANDIDATE],
I understand that you are standing in the upcoming [NAME OF SEAT] election, where I live. I am very concerned about climate change and I would like to know where you stand on this issue.
Could you tell me:
- Do you fully support the UK’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2050?
- Do you fully support the setting of strong local carbon targets, and will you work to ensure the council makes progress towards them if you are elected?
- Is there anything else that you want me to know about your position on climate change and net zero?
While the country faces many issues, this is one that is particularly important to me.
I intend to share your response with ‘Climate Election,’ a project at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science. They have no interest in telling anyone how to vote, but want to ensure that candidate views on climate change and net zero are available to help voters make an informed choice.
