How the Cali Fund will become a successful model (in German)
Lea Reitmeier, a sustainable finance analyst at the London-based Grantham Research Institute, proposes that Germany and other signatory states could introduce a requirement for non-contributing companies to provide evidence that they do not use genetic resources or biological data. This “comply or explain” approach has proven successful at the EU level for reporting risky chemicals. Reitmeier also suggests linking contributions to the Cali Fund to sustainable financing instruments such as bonds or loans. Central banks and finance ministries could provide support by granting favourable regulatory treatment in line with financial stability objectives. The analyst praises the fact that the establishment of the fund provides, for the first time, an international instrument that links the economic use of nature by companies with the protection of natural resources.
