About me

Jake is an ESRC funded PhD student whose research looks at the ways in which seasonal labour migration from coastal Bangladesh is embedded within the context of land use change, environmental change, livelihoods and labour. Drawing from mobile and multi-sited ethnographic approaches Jake’s research seeks to explore how context shapes migration decisions throughout the migration process and the ways in which the context in the sending region shapes the likelihood that migration is successful in the migrants’ own terms. Jake is interested in the way rural/agrarian change shapes processes of urbanisation and his research draws from political ecology, critical agrarian studies and labour geographies to explore how seasonal labour migrants fit within broader urbanisations.

Jake holds a BA in History from the University of Leeds, and an MA in Migration and Global Development Studies from the University of Sussex. He has worked in international development for several years, with experience of working in Bangladesh, Rwanda and Kenya.
