Hanh-An is a PhD student in Human Geography and Urban Studies. Her research examines the continuity of development discourse, narrative, and progress in Vietnam, looking through the lens of built environment projects. Although she was previously trained in mixed methodologies—with a focus on spatial data analysis, Hanh-An’s current work is predominantly qualitative, involving ethnography and creative mappings.
In her PhD research, Hanh-An explores the contemporary transition of workers’ housings, between post-socialist mass housing to modern social housing, in industrial centres of North Vietnam. She hopes to investigate the political and social impacts of development (dis)continuities, to trace the presence and manoeuvring of ‘future-oriented’ imaginaries, and to position the infrastructural legacy and built environment heritage of post-socialism in modern Vietnam.
Prior to joining LSE Department of Geography & Environment, Hanh-An holds a MA degree in Social Sciences with a concentration in Sociology from The University of Chicago (USA). She also holds BA from the University of Chicago where she double-majored in Geographical Sciences and Environmental & Urban Studies. Her BA/MA thesis was on the sociological pathways of changing in ethnic housescape in the mountains of Northern Vietnam.
