This seminar explores the development of religious fundamentalisms and fascist governments in the US, Europe and Africa and the role of queer feminist transnational solidarity in countering state and non state actors,

Drawing on three case studies in Africa, the seminar will offer some reflections on how movements are working to resist closing civic space and build collective protection and security approaches to sustain movements.

Dr. Awino Okech's teaching and research interests lies in the nexus between gender, sexuality and nation/state making projects as they occur in conflict and post-conflict societies. In addition, Dr Okech sees the processes through which knowledge production occurs as critical to transforming and re-thinking academic practice today. Therefore the politics of knowledge production, research and research(ing) form a central part for her teaching and researching focus. Prior to her appointment at the Centre for Gender Studies, she contributed to knowledge production and transfer through an adjunct teaching position with the African Leadership Centre at Kings College London where she co-convened the Gender Leadership and Society module as part of the MSc in Security, Leadership and Society.

Admission is on a first-come-first-served basis for those with tickets. Not everyone who books uses their ticket, so, to ensure a full house, we allocate more tickets than there are places. We also run returns queues at the events and fill any empty seats with those waiting outside the theatre shortly before the start of the event. This usually means we have a full house without having to turn people away, but there may be occasions when we do have more people than seats available. Please ensure you arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time to avoid disappointment. Please note, tickets are not transferable- if you can't make it, and this means an empty place, then this would be allocated to someone waiting in the returns queue

For most ticketed events some people from the returns queue do get in, but there is no guarantee of entry and the numbers vary from event to event. We always try to keep the returns queue updated on chances of getting in as it nears the start of the event.
