The Department of Finance runs an extensive Professional Development Programme alongside the Academic programme in order to support and prepare students to enter the job market. Starting in the pre-sessional course in September, students are given a wide range of careers support, from CV workshops and application advice to sector overviews and opportunities to meet and network with recent alumni who are working in London.
The LSE Careers Service is one of the best in the UK, offering hundreds of sessions each year from interviewing skills to company recruitment presentations; however, in addition to this great resource the Department of Finance also offers throughout the year tailored, individual careers support to its students via a number of highly experienced sector consultants and Associate Programme Directors, each with significant experience of working in financial services.
The typical Professional Development Pre-sessional Programme involves:
- Introduction to Careers in Finance
- CV and Cover Letter Workshops
- 1-to-1 CV Checking
- Job Application Form Skills Session
- City Speaker Series
- Consulting Case Study Course (for some programmes)
- Networking skills
- Alumni Panel and Networking Reception
City Speakers
During September and October the Department organises a number of City Speaker lecturers where practitioners from range of different areas of finance are invited in to talk to our students about their roles and the skills required to succeed. These sessions offer an informal opportunity for Finance students to learn about specific sectors within finance and to assess their fit for specific careers and roles.
In previous years the City Speaker Series has included representatives from Aberdeen Asset Management, Citi, Credit Suisse, Corazon Capital, CQS, Goldman Sachs, Houlihan Lokey, JP Morgan, Markit, McKinsey, Moelis & Co, Nomura, Standard Bank and Unilever.
Alumni Networking
The Department has an ever expanding network of alumni both working in London and in all of the world’s major financial centres.
Students will have the opportunity to meet and network with former students, either via our alumni panel, informally at a drinks reception or online via our programme groups on LinkedIn.
