Fabian Mushövel is a Visiting Fellow at LSE European Institute, where he previously served as the Nicholas Barr Fellow in European Political Economy. Prior to joining LSE, he was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He completed his PhD at the LSE’s European Institute and held visiting scholar positions at the Economics Department at UC Berkeley and the Government Department at Harvard University. He has previously worked as a consultant for Chatham House and analyst at the Centre for Economic Performance.

Fabian works on matters of economic inequality and redistribution as well as the politics of the welfare state and its reform, both in Europe and other advanced capitalist democracies. At the LSE, Fabian was part of the International Inequalities Institute’s Leverhulme Doctoral Programme. In his dissertation, Fabian assessed the distributive effects of austerity measures and structural reforms during the Eurozone crisis, with regard to both income and labour market inequalities, and with a particular focus on how the involvement of non-majoritarian institutions affects how the burden of adjustment is distributed among different social groups.

Going forward, his research focuses on welfare state responses to the challenges of digitalisation and automation of the workforce in the context of different welfare regimes and growth models.

Fabian has taught undergraduate level seminars at LSE in ‘capitalism, democracy and equality’, and ‘the politics of economic policy’, for which he won a teaching excellence award.
