I joined the European Institute at an interesting moment—studying the European Union in a country preparing to exit it. Despite the backdrop of Brexit, my experience at the Institute was really valuable. The professors were committed to engaging with students, always taking the time to offer guidance and share their expertise. One of my favorite moments was the 'EU in Practice' seminar series, where we learned directly from Brussels-based policymakers about the real-world intricacies of EU politics (often continuing discussions with classmates in a nearby pub). The European Institute was excellent at creating a community, not only due to its relatively small size but also thanks to the dedication of its staff.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic cut my LSE experience short, I felt well-prepared for the next steps in my career. After studying the theoretical dimensions of the European Union, it made perfect sense for me to move to Brussels to experience EU politics firsthand. Today, I’m able to contribute to European decision-making as a Political Advisor for the Socialist & Democrats Group in the European Parliament, specialising in EU foreign affairs, human rights and EU Enlargement.
I advise Members of the European Parliament with political strategy, drafting amendments, negotiating with other Political Groups, and preparing for critical votes. While the European Parliament cannot directly set the EU’s foreign policy, it has a broad influence over many of its aspects. For instance, the inter-parliamentary diplomacy, often underestimated, is essential for strengthening relations and promoting EU values worldwide. I advise Members in their frequent exchanges with their counterparts from national parliaments to achieve these goals. The European Parliament is definitely a dynamic workplace with new things happening every day.
Some of my LSE classmates have become my closest friends here in Brussels. It was the European Institute student community which helped me grow both professionally and personally, and which I hope will remain a part of my life in the years to come.
